About us, history and committee representatives

QSAM at DTs HotelQSAM is about:

  • encouraging members of our community to get active with a sport or recreation club
  • sharing information, knowledge and expertise
  • creating safe places for members and friends of the queer community to explore the opportunities offered by sport and recreation
  • realising sport and recreation as an agent for social change; and
  • facilitating participation in international queer sporting events.

QSAM encourages offers of assistance from individuals and those involved in sport and recreation clubs in project areas such as women in sport, positive people in sport, officials, homophobia and sponsorship.

QSAM is creating access to sport and recreation for people of all abilities and ages.

QSAM evolved from a gathering of Melbourne’s queer sporting clubs in December 2004 to begin planning for involvement in the international queer sporting meets in 2006 (the Chicago Gay Games and Montreal Outgames). QSAM has emerged for and by Melbourne’s queer sporting clubs in lieu of any other partnership, alliance or central leadership from pre-existing organisations.

QSAM is managed by a committee drawn from a variety of sports.
The committee structure is as follows:
